Pump bushings – what to know
What is a pump bushing?
With the development of coal mining technology and the expansion of the application industry, more and more self-lubricating bearings are used in the hydraulic system of coal mine machinery. But because of the specific size and material of the application, Self-lubricating bearings can be applied to coal mining machinery such as roadheader, coal mining machines, etc. While ensuring self-lubrication, it can also reduce the time of installation and replacement of bearings to improve operational efficiency.
Pump bushings are specially designed bushings that fit into a recess in a pump. They are designed to maintain the proper proportional spacing within the pump unit. Pumps are complex structures with many different seals and areas where leaks can occur. Many components are used to address potential leaks, and pump bushings are used to ensure that these components do not interfere with the proper movement and function of the pump itself.
Self-lubricating pump bearing structure design, more flexible installation and adjustment
★ Good operation performance
★ High precision
★ Self-lubricating bearing, maintenance-free
★ Good anti-fouling ability
What is the purpose of pump bushings?
Pumps use various forces, such as suction, to do their job. The forces involved in the pump’s action naturally require a high quality seal in its environment, as the seal is what provides the highest quality of suction throughout the pump and its shaft. The pump bushing is one of the most important components of the sealing system. The primary function of the pump bushing is to properly seal the pump body to prevent air leakage. Pump bushings can also be used to manipulate the size of the pump, using different sizes to allow more or less airflow into the pump. This can be referred to as choking.
What are the most common pump bushing materials?
Pump bushings can be made from any of the materials used in other bushings. This can include inexpensive metals like steel, expensive metals like bronze, bi-metals, or synthetic materials like PFTE and nylon. This depends largely on the type of pump being used, as the environment in which the bushing will be operating largely determines the material it is made of. If there will be a lot of water or corrosive materials like dust or sand, synthetic pump bushings or bronze pump bushings may be better than steel and brass pump bushings.
Size of submersible pump bushings
Submersible pump bushings are pump bushings that can be completely submerged in liquid and still do their job satisfactorily. These bushings are usually made of synthetic materials such as nylon and PFTE because they are self-lubricating and more destructive to water. They have a low coefficient of friction and are not heavily affected by water, making them the best choice for submersible applications.
Submersible pump bushings come in a variety of sizes and they can be customized to fit your business or application needs. Pumps can come in all shapes and sizes and have a myriad of features, so it is important to determine the ideal size and material for your pump bushings and order them correctly.

Pump bushing failure and removal
Like all parts, pump bushings don’t last forever and they will eventually need to be replaced. For most pump bushings, you will need to hire a professional to do the replacement for you. Replacing pump bushings is not an easy task and usually requires several specialized, industrial-strength tools. If you are unsure how to replace pump bushings before reading this article, you should probably just hire someone who already knows how to do so.
Pump bushing replacement and installation kits
If you think you may be able to replace your pump bushing yourself, you may want to consider using a pump bushing replacement and installation kit. These kits are specifically designed to provide you with all the necessary parts to replace a failed pump bushing yourself, and in most cases are effective. Just make sure that the size and specifications of the kit you purchase match what you need.

Self-lubricating bushes and bearings are used where the bearing must operate without lubricant or with marginal lubricant. Our goal is to ensure that the bearing offers the best performance and maximum life in various conditions. The principle of operation of self-lubricating bearings is that, during the initial bearing break-in period, there will be a solid lubricating film created by the transfer of a small amount of material from the bearing layer. This film comes into direct contact with moving parts, protecting and lubricating mating components and extending bearing life.
- Sintered Bronze / Iron Sintered Self Lubricated Bushes / Parts
- Dry Bushes & Washers
- Graphite Filled Bronze Bushes / Plates
- Wrapped Bronze Bearing
- Bimetal bushes
Self-lubricating Bearing Bush Advantages
- Elimination of Oil Holes and Grooves – No cost of machining oil holes and oil grooves required. The self-lubrication eliminates the need for an additional oil system.
- Reduction of machinery operating costs – Thanks to the maintenance-free features, the lubricating oil is drastically reduced; machinery operating costs will also decrease.
- Maintenance-Free Operation – Self-lubricating bearings solve the problem of lubrication operation and lubrication devices, which also helps reduce bearing maintenance costs.
- Simplified mechanical design and fabrication. With the above advantages, thin wall thickness, higher load and excellent wear resistance, the mechanical structure can be simplified and made more economical.
