PTFE material is reinforced with bronze wire mesh embedded into the PTFE below its running surface to reduce crowning.
The PTFE liner has anti-friction and anti-scratch properties, as well as high electrical insulation. The coefficient of dry friction between the PTFE packing and the friction surface of the steel guide plate is 0.05 to 0.08, or about 20% to 30% of the coefficient of Babbitted bearings.
Crowning using PTFE thrust bearing linings are drastically reduced since the thermal conductivity for PTFE linings is only 0.05% of the thermal conductivity of the babbitt / steel gasket. In this way, operational errors associated with restarting generators can be eliminated between stopping and restarting.
