Overview – Bushings and Plain Bearings

Bushings, also known as “ Plain Bearings ” or “Sleeve Bushing,” are designed for use in self-lubricating applications and offer features and benefits unavailable with many rolling-element bearings.

Plain bearings are a reliable and economical solution for applications with multidirectional and self-aligning movements.

Plain Bearing Bushing Materials
Plain bearings must be made of durable, low-friction, low-wear materials for bearings and shafts, and resistant to high temperatures and corrosion. Typically, bearings consist of at least two components, one of which is soft and the other is hard. In general, the harder the surface in contact, the lower the coefficient of friction and the greater the pressure required between the two, which can become stuck when lubrication fails.

in harsh environments. Graphite is a dry lubricant, so it is low friction and low maintenance. Copper adds strength and durability and provides heat dissipation properties.

Lubricated bearings

The types of lubrication systems can be divided into three categories.
Plain Bearing, which requires lubricant (e.g., oil, grease, etc.) applied from the outside.
Plain Bearing, which contains a lubricant (e.g., bronze, graphite, etc.) within the bearing wall. Typically, these bearings require external lubricants to achieve maximum performance.
Plain Bearing is made of materials that are used as lubricants. These bearings are often considered “self-lubricating” and can operate without external lubricants.

Plain bushing bearings, or more commonly known as sliding contact bearings and plain bearings (sometimes called solid bearings, journal bearings or friction bearings in railroads), are the simplest type of bearing and consist of only a bearing surface with no rolling elements. As a result, the journal (i.e., the part of the shaft in contact with the bearing) slides over the bearing surface. The simplest example of a plain bearing is a shaft that rotates in a bore. A simple linear bearing can be a pair of planes designed to allow movement; for example, a drawer and the slide rail or lathe bed guide on which it rests.

Generally speaking, plain bearings are the least expensive type of bearing. They are also compact, lightweight, and have a high load-carrying capacity.

Design
The design of a plain bushing bearing depends on the type of motion that the bearing must provide.

  • Journal (frictionradial, or rotarybearing
  • Linear bearing
  • Thrust bearing: A thrust bearing provides a bearing surface for forces acting axial to the shaft.

Plain Bearing Bushings
A bushing, also known as a sleeve, is a self-contained plain bearing that is inserted into a housing to provide a bearing surface for rotating applications; this is the most common form of a plain bearing. Common designs include solid (sleeve and flange), split, and clamped bushings. A sleeve, split or clamped bushing is simply a “sleeve” of material with an inside diameter (ID), an outside diameter (OD), and a length. The difference between these three types is that a solid sleeve is solid all around, a split bushing has a cutout along its length, and a clamping bearing is similar to a split bushing but has a clamping (or fastening) at the cutout where the sections are joined. A flanged bushing is a sleeve bushing that has a flange at one end that extends radially outward from the outer diameter. The flange is used to positively position the bushing during installation, or to provide a thrust-bearing surface.

Driving the Future of Plain Bushing Bearings

Explore the plain bearings, rod ends, and bushings that meet your application’s needs, as well as deliver high reliability, long service life, and minimal maintenance.

Plain bearings are used in many industries and in many applications in which the challenge of oscillating movements and possible misalignments must be overcome cost-effectively and reliably. From mining and construction machinery to agricultural and forestry machines to forklifts and solar systems.

Plain bearings, also referred to as bushes, bushings or sleeve bearings, are usually cylindrical in shape and contain no moving parts.

Plain bearings consist of two parts. On one side is the fixed part that carries the loads called the support and on the other side is the area that is worn out. in other words, the one in contact with the moving element: the socket.

Sleeve bushings are mechanical components which are designed to carry a load and which allow sliding or rotational movement between two parts of a machine. Their main purpose is to prevent the wear of the machine support points, which would occur if the shafts rolled directly on the structure.

Self-lubricating bushings are used when the bearing is to operate with or without marginal grease. Our goal is to ensure that the bearing offers the best performance and maximum life in various conditions. The principle of operation of self-lubricating bearings is that a solid lubricating film will form during the initial break-in period, formed by the transfer of a small amount of material from the bearing layer. This plate comes into direct contact with the moving parts, protecting and lubricating the mating parts and extending the life of the bearing.

Since bearings generally resist friction that generates heat, lubricants such as oil or grease are used to prevent the excessive wear and tear that this frictional heat can cause. Lubrication-free bushings do not need any lubricating oil because the bearing body has a lubricating structure which is made possible by lubricating the oil in the bearing housing or by depositing a solid lubricant or the like. Since they do not need lubricating oil, lubrication bushings are often used in applications such as precision machinery, which makes refilling of lubricating oil difficult, and equipment with low oil affinity. They also dramatically reduce maintenance costs by eliminating the need for regular lubrication and allowing stable operation over long periods of time. Lubrication-free bushings come in a variety of shapes which can be used for different applications as needed. Examples include straight sockets, collar sockets, flange sockets, and housing sockets.
